Love swimming and want to work in a fun, interactive environment? We are looking for Lifeguards and Lead Lifeguards and/or Swim Instructors to join our team!

The City operates two Aquatic Facilities; Clarke Memorial Swim Center, located in Heather Farm Park and the newly renovated Larkey Swim Center, located in Larkey Park. Seasonal and year round part time employment opportunities available. We accept American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certificates or Ellis & Associates International Lifeguarding Certificates. Candidates must enjoy the water, being outdoors, and interacting with children and adults alike.

Representative Duties

Under general supervision, our Lifeguards perform a variety of duties helping to enforce all rules and regulations pertaining to the safety and well-being of visitors and patrons. Examples of main duties include:

  • Actively scan and oversee patron activity
  • Enforce all rules and regulations
  • Recognize and respond professionally and appropriately to all emergencies
  • Maintain a clean and safe environment
  • Maintain certain pool records and reports as required
  • Perform related duties as required, basic maintenance, equipment care, and chemical pool testing
  • Deal tactfully and courteously with the public
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other City employees, other agencies, and the general public
  • Actively attend and participate in required staff trainings and in-service drills
  • Any other tasks that management sets forth


In addition to the duties above, Lead Lifeguards are also responsible for:

  • Provide for safety of swim center participants through vigilance, emergency response and rule enforcement, etc.
  • Plan and organize swim lessons while guiding assistant instructors
  • Enthusiastically represent the Swim Lesson Program
  • Take initiative in daily tasks and set an example during training and activities

  • Other related duties as assigned 


Qualifications Guidelines

Ready to start working with the City of Walnut Creek as a Lifeguard? Before you apply, be sure that you meet the qualification guidelines below:

  • Must possess current Lifeguard Certification, which include CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Lifeguard First Aid. (Not certified? No problem. Apply now and we will help you get certified before your start date. Learn more about classes offered HERE.)
  • Proficient swimming skills
  • Ability to engage in physical activity
  • Ability to work at both City Swim Centers
  • Must be at least 15 years old at time of hire.

Interested in becoming a Lead Lifeguard? In addition to the above qualifications, you are also require to: 

  • Have two seasons of paid work experience as a Lifeguard and Swim Instructor
  • Have knowledge of swim instruction
  • Must be at least 16 years old at time of hire.


Supplemental Information

If you are interested in becoming a Lifeguard, but do not yet have a Lifeguard Certification, you are able to register for Lifeguard Training class through Walnut Creek Recreation. For more information, please call 925-943-5859.

Lifeguards undergo California DOJ and FBI fingerprinting as part of the background process.
