Aquatic Specialist I/Lifeguard I

The City of Vacaville is accepting applications  for Aquatic Specialists 
in the Parks & Recreation Department. Come join the fun!

• Maintaining order and enforcing established rules and safety procedures; 
• Scanning designated swim area constantly to ensure patron safety;
• Making frequent facility checks and maintaining facility cleanliness; 
• Performing First Aid and CPR techniques, in addition to water rescue and safety procedures; 
• Instructing and interacting with aquatic program participants of all ages; 
• Performing facility and equipment set-up, take-down and general housekeeping; 
• Opening and closing facilities; 
• Performing reception, cashiering, cash handling and recordkeeping duties as required; and 
• Attending mandatory in-service trainings.

• Aquatic Specialists may work on a year-round basis; a maximum of 129 hours per month.
• Lifeguards may work only during the summer season (April 1-September 30); a maximum of 40 hours per week.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   None required.
Experience:  None required. Six (6) months of experience in an aquatics environment as a competitive swimmer, lifeguard or swim instructor is desirable.
Certification: Must possess and maintain the following American Red Cross certifications:

• Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer*
• Title 22 First Aid for Public Safety Personnel certification within 12 months of hire

• Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) or equivalent
• Title 22 First Aid for Public Safety Personnel

Certification requirements are a condition of initial and continued employment.

Must be at least 15 years of age by time of employment.

High school students under the age of 18 are required to obtain a work permit from their school district as a condition of initial and continued employment, until they reach the age of 18 or graduate.

*Applicants with expired lifeguard certificates that are still within their recertification grace period (120 days) are encouraged to apply. The City of Vacaville will provide those who have passed the selection process an online provisional recertification class and certificate. The employee will then have 120 days to complete and pass their in-person skills and lifeguard exam, at which time they will receive a valid 2-year Lifeguard Certificate. Class will be held based on current county, state and federal COVID-19 guidelines.
