The City of Vacaville  is seeking an experienced, talented individual to fill the key executive leadership position of Director of Public Works. This position will report directly to the City Manager, and is responsible for overseeing and guiding the daily function and long-term vision set forth in the City’s Strategic Plan. The Director provides professional and technical guidance to over 113 full-time and 40 part-time employees organized into three divisions: administration, engineering services and maintenance.

ABOUT YOU

The Ideal Candidate
Vacaville is seeking a strong leader who understands the importance of customer service and who possesses the ability to quickly respond to direction and concerns from the City Council and City Manager’s Office, and the public, while still insuring the Department maintains financial, moral, ethical and professional standards at the highest level.  Additional characteristics of the ideal candidate include:

  • Ability to be inclusive at all levels, from an entry Maintenance Worker, to fellow department heads, to a business owner and resident, to the mayor and Council;
  • Has demonstrated experience in personnel management that displays a balanced approach between equity and firm decision making while acknowledging and recognizing performance accomplishments and success;

  • Possesses strong interpersonal skills to successfully build solid relationships with City leadership, partnering agencies, neighboring public works agencies, and other key stakeholders;
  • Experienced in meeting and speaking publicly with City stakeholders, City Council and the general public;
  • Enjoys the challenge of effectively managing a demanding workload of quickly shifting priorities and assumes ownership of key priorities and projects.
Qualifications
This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Public Administration or a closely related field; and seven (7) years of increasingly responsible and varied experience in a municipal public works department that includes a broad range of services such as Capitol Project engineering, Public Works infrastructure maintenance and/or traffic engineering, and that includes at least four (4) years of administrative and management responsibility.   Registration as a Professional Civil Engineer in the State of California is desirable, but not required.
