THE DEPARTMENT

The Tracy Police Department is a full-service department where patrol officers respond to calls for service, conduct complete investigations, identify and investigate suspicious activity, and demonstrate strong report writing and customer service skills.  Entry-level Police Officers typically start on patrol working 4-eleven hour work days (a 4/11 schedule).   The Department encourages personal growth.  Special assignments are available once employee status becomes permanent.  For more information about the Tracy Police Department, visit our website at: www.tracypd.com. 

 

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:  

 

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.  College level course work in police science, public administration, or closely related field is desirable.
  • Must possess a valid California Class C driver license.  
  • All applicants must be at least 21 years of age.  
  • No felony convictions
  • Must be a United States citizen/ or legally eligible to work in the United States & apply for U.S. Citizenship
  • Must possess a valid California POST Basic Certificate upon appointment
  • Minimum of one-year experience as a full time sworn Police Officer with a Police or Sheriff’s department (at least one

 

(1) year patrol experience) and have passed a probationary period are required. 

 

A copy of your Basic POST Certificate must be attached to the application. 

 

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES 

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain and maintain, an appropriate, valid California Driver license.
  •  Must possess a valid California POST Basic Certificate upon appointment. 

 

THE SELECTION PROCESS 

 A limited number of applicants whose qualifications best meet the needs of the City will be invited to participate in the selection process, which may consist of a training and experience review of application materials, an appraisal interview with a panel and/or other qualifying tests.

 

 • Applications will be reviewed & considered for placement on the eligibility list.  Tentative selection interviews for those applicants placed on the list will be in late July 2020. 

 

 The City reserves the right to modify the selection process at any time.  Successful candidates will have their names placed on an employment list for further consideration in the selection process.  The most qualified candidates will be required to submit to a background investigation, psychological assessment and medical examination in which a drug screen will be included.  The City reserves the right to test an applicant in any other manner to determine eligibility. Appointment will be contingent upon the ability to provide proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
