Appointment Type: This is for a Temporary-Exempt (TEX), as-needed position not to exceed 1040 hours. This position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive civil service examination process, is considered “at will” and shall serve at the discretion of the appointing officer.
Position Description: Under general supervision, performs skilled bricklaying work in connection with the maintenance and repair of brick sewers and related facilities; exercises work direction over subordinates assisting in such work; and performs related duties as required.
Typical Duties: Typical duties include, but are not limited to (1) laying out and constructing brick sidewalk in various brick patterns; (2) repairing brick and concrete sewers; (3) laying and repairing main and side sewer pipe of various sizes; (4) building and repairing maintenance service holes, culverts and catch basins; (5) repairing overflow and weir wall structures; (6) making emergency repairs to sewage treatment plants and pumping stations; (7) supervising hodcarriers in the performance of various duties.
Nature of work: This position requires considerable physical effort in working in confined areas; exposure to extremely disagreeable working conditions involving working in and around raw sewage.
Experience and Education:
Completion of high school, supplemented by at least two years of journey level bricklaying experience, preferably including underground experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
License and Certification:
Possession of a valid California driver’s license.
Applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirement by the final filing date unless otherwise noted.
One year full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40 hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above 40 hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.
