The City of Salinas invites interested applicants to apply for Equipment Mechanic II. This recruitment may close at anytime. Qualified candidates will be invited to test on an on-going basis.

Under general supervision, supervises, performs, and/or assists in the diagnosis and performance of complex mechanical repairs to gasoline, diesel, and other power-driven vehicles and equipment; operates computerized diagnostic and repair equipment; performs specialized mechanical work such as welding and metal fabrication; supervises, trains and assists Mechanic I's and Maintenance Assistants; and performs other work as required.
This is the full journey-level in the Equipment Mechanic class series. Positions assigned to this class perform the full range of journey level automotive and equipment repair and regularly perform the most complex diagnostic, maintenance and repair work. In addition, an Equipment Mechanic II assumes responsibility for providing training for Equipment Mechanic I's.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general and functional supervision from the Equipment Mechanic Crew Supervisor. Technical supervision is provided to Equipment Mechanic I's and Vehicle Maintenance Assistants.
Inspects, diagnoses, supervises and assists in complex and common mechanical maintenance and repair, including modification and fabrication, on various types of heavy, light, large small or specialized equipment and vehicles, e.g. hydraulic, pneumatic or other fluid driven, gas or diesel powered trucks, tractors, loaders, cranes, compressors, generators, etc. Performs major mechanical repair or overhaul of gasoline diesel or other fueled vehicles or equipment including the major systems of the vehicle or equipment, e.g. fuel delivery, lubrication, cooling, electrical, drive train, etc. Performs minor repair, maintenance or adjustments to vehicle and equipment, e.g. tune-ups, carburetor, fuel injection, brake and light adjustments, etc. Performs smog and B.I.T. mandated inspections for the City's vehicle fleet. Assists in the preparation of maintenance and repair schedules, work priorities, and maintains accurate and detailed records of work done and repairs made. Participates in establishing and enforcing repair and maintenance standards; assists in developing and updating maintenance programs; assists in revising operational procedures and maintaining shop safety programs. Maintains work, time and material records. Assists other mechanics in the performance of mechanical repairs as required. Performs emergency roadside mechanical services for the City's vehicle and equipment fleet. May assume responsibility for shop operations in the absence of the Equipment Mechanic Crew Supervisor.
Principles and techniques of repair and maintenance methods, tools, parts, and equipment used in servicing, maintaining and repairing a varying range of vehicles and equipment. Proper use of tools and equipment and procedures used in the diagnosis, adjustment, repair, and overhaul of gasoline and diesel-powered equipment. Principles and theories of operation of internal and external combustion powered vehicle and equipment. Operating and repair characteristics of the entire range of City?owned equipment. Proper use of oxy-acetylene and electric welding and cutting equipment. Safe work practices. Federal and state guidelines regarding brakes, smog control devices and testing, lighting, OSHA regulations, and safety equipment related to the use of tools, materials, processes and equipment in the inspection, maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment.
Train skilled and semi?skilled mechanics. Perform minor and major mechanical work on a variety of motorized equipment and vehicles. Identify complex technical mechanical problems and perform appropriate repairs. Correctly use a variety of tools and equipment. Prepare and maintain a variety of shop and repair records. Understand and carry out written and verbal instructions. Perform journey level mechanical work including the trouble shooting of equipment for both major and minor repairs. Exercise sound judgment and initiative, under general supervision. Determine labor and material requirements. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships. Communicate clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing. Read and understand electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems schematic diagrams. Service test and repair emission control systems.
Effectively diagnose the cause of mechanical or electrical malfunctions. Efficiently perform a variety of complex mechanical repairs. Safely operate a variety of power and hand tools and equipment.
License or Certificate:
Possession of a valid California Driver's License. Obtain California Class B Driver's License within six (6) months of hire.
Education and Experience:
An example of the education and experience which most likely demonstrates the skills, knowledge and abilities required to perform the duties would be any combination equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade, and three years of progressively responsible journey-level experience in automotive, light and heavy equipment maintenance and repair.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL CHARACTERISTICS
Physical mobility and stamina to stand and walk for long periods of time, and to walk over uneven surfaces. Physical agility to push/pull, squat, twist, turn, bend, climb, stoop and reach overhead. Physical strength to lift up to 50 pounds, and up to 90 pounds with assistance. Manual dexterity sufficient to use hand and power tools. Hearing and speaking ability sufficient to converse over the telephone, two-way radio and in person often over the noise of machinery and traffic, to detect and describe noises in machinery. Vision sufficient to read fine printed materials on labels, manuals, diagrams, to work with color-coded wires with no color deficiencies, and to drive. Detect odors. Mental acuity to collect and interpret data, evaluate, reason, define problems, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, make valid judgments and decisions.
Willingness and ability to work outdoors in a service bay, and occasionally in emergency situations, work under adverse weather conditions such as at night, in heavy traffic, in heat, cold and rain; wear a uniform and appropriate safety equipment; and attend workshops and classes during work and non-work as required. Work in and around potentially hazardous materials including various petroleum products, grease, motor oil, brake fluid, antifreeze, and freon.

SALARY STEPS: Appointments are normally made at the first step. Consideration is given for increase to the second step after successful completion of a six-month probationary period. (Employees appointed at a higher step will be eligible for consideration for the next step after one year, providing they successfully complete a six-month probationary period.)
