The City of Pittsburg's Engineering Division is looking for INTERNS to assist with various projects.

The Engineering Division of the City's Community Development Department is seeking college students or recent graduates with an interest in engineering, construction project management or a related field to assist with some field work, scanning and organizing hard project files, maps, and drawings for a paid internship.  The City of Pittsburg was recognized in 2019 by Earn & Learn as a proud internship partner.  The City helps interns gain valuable work experience to prepare for future permanent job opportunities.

About the Engineering Division
The Engineering Division of the Community Development Department ensures City owned facilities such as streets, storm drain systems, water distribution networks, sewer collection facilities and improvements are constructed where needed and improvements meet appropriate standards. Staff also designs and constructs City projects, assures development projects meet City requirements, manage traffic related issues and improvements like signals, process and issue permits for encroachments within the public property, site grading, parking permits and wide loads permits, and maintains all necessary records.

Selected candidates is limited to work up to 999 hours per fiscal year.

The City of Pittsburg is a full-service city following the council-manager form of government. We have about 290 full time employees and about 350 employees total (depending on the season).  Pittsburg is currently organized into the following departments: City Management, Community Development (Building, Engineering, and Planning), Community Services (Housing Authority, Pittsburg Power Company, and the Successor Agency to the former Redevelopment Agency), Economic Development and Recreation, Human Resources, Finance, Police, and Public Works (Operations/Maintenance, Utilities, Facilities, Parks, and Water Treatment). Fire Protection services are provided by the Contra Costa County Consolidated Fire Department.

 Minimum Qualifications:
This position is designed to accommodate an individual who is currently enrolled or has recently completed an academic program, in order to allow for the application of academic theory to a real life work environment.

College Intern Salary:
  • $14.50 per hour for those who have not completed two years of education.
  • $16.00 per hour for those who have completed a minimum of two years of education.
  • $17.50 - $19.00 per hour for those who have completed a Bachelor's or higher degree.
 Selection Process:

1. 2. Departmental Hiring Interviews: Accepted applicants will be interviewed by supervisory staff and offered the hourly position if successful.  The hiring manager will be continuously reviewing the applications.

3. Background Screening: Candidate will be fingerprinted for a background check and complete any other required screening.

4) The successful candidate who passes the background process will complete new hire paperwork and begin work soon after.
