The Building Maintenance Supervisor position is a full-time position located at Camp Roberts, in San Luis Obispo County, which is a secure military facility.  The Building Maintenance Supervisor requires a high skill level in construction/trade knowledge, supervision, and project management.  The successful candidate must have strong field and technical knowledge and organizational skills; understand military requirements; and utilize City procurement procedures.  Building Maintenance Supervisors are “working” supervisors and will be expected to perform routine and project-based work assignments as well as oversee and assign work to field staff, supervise projects and interact with Military counterparts semi-independently or independently.  Prior experience working on a military installation is desirable.

Candidates who successfully complete all components of this recruitment process will be placed on an eligibility list. The eligibility list is active for 12-months and will only be used to fill the Building Maintenance Supervisor position at Camp Roberts. Any future authorized Building Maintenance Supervisor vacancies at the Monterey location will be filled with a separate recruitment.

Application Process
A limited number of applicants who clearly show that they most closely meet the needs of this position in terms of training, experience, education, and other job-related characteristics will be accepted to participate in the selection process. This process will include evaluation and initial screening of the standard on-line City application to determine which candidates progress to the next phase of the recruitment process. The subsequent selection process may include a written test/written exercise, performance exercise, panel interview, and a final departmental interview. As a condition of employment, the selected candidate may be required to successfully pass a physical exam including a drug screen, a Livescan fingerprint background check, and a reference check. The successful candidate will be required to pass a Federal background check to gain access to the military facility. The Human Resources Department reserves the right to make changes to components of the examination process.

Summary:
Under direction, to supervise the maintenance, repair, construction and remodeling of building facilities, including rental units and contractual work. Assist in the preparation of budget; and to do related work as required.

Examples of Duties

Supervises and manages maintenance, repairs and remodeling projects; oversees contractual work of facilities, including carpeting, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, roofing repairs, painting, tile setting, lock installation and repair, and furniture refinishing, masonry and HVAC; observes and reports the need for major maintenance and repair; implements the facility preventive maintenance program; supervises the setting-up of facilities for special activities; oversees major building repair work done by contractors, writes scope of work, prepares cost estimates, obtains bids and prepares paperwork; issues requisitions for purchase of supplies and equipment; assists in preparation of departmental budget; maintains records and prepares required reports; schedules, assigns, directs, and inspects the work of building maintenance crew. Maintains and oversees computerized work management system; in the absence of the General Services Superintendent, can be temporarily placed in authority; oversees the storage and disposal of excess of City equipment; meets, confers, and coordinates with Departmental representatives on all maintenance activities. Responds to emergency calls (stand-by), work weekends and nights as required.

Typical Qualifications

Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school and five years of experience in building maintenance, repair, and managing building/construction work crews.
