Seeking an individual to fill position of Administrative Clerk I/II in Public Works/Operations & Maintenance and to established an eligibility for future openings. 

Responsible for performing a variety of general clerical duties including word processing, typing, transcription, proofreading, record keeping, file maintenance, reception and assigned administrative and program responsibilities.

Administrative Clerk I - This is an entry level class in the Administrative Clerk series. This class is distinguished from the City's Office Clerk by the addition of non-routine assignments. It is distinguished from the journey level Administrative Clerk II by the amount of supervision required. Employees in this class normally work under close supervision performing a group of closely related duties according to established procedures. Generally, work is observed and reviewed both during its performance and upon completion. Employees at this level are required to have typing skill but no previous clerical experience, and are not expected to perform with the same independence and judgment on matters allocated to the journey level.

Administrative Clerk II - This is a full journey level class within the Administrative Clerk series. This class is distinguished from the Administrative Clerk I by the assignment of the full range of duties. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies within the work unit. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and can be filled by advancement from the entry level. Receives general supervision.

SELECTION PROCEDURE:

Exam Process: A limited number of candidates whose applications indicate that they, among those competing, are better qualified in terms of related education, training and experience will be invited to participate in a written exam (pass/fail) and an interview process (weighted 100%). The most qualified candidates from this process will be placed on an employment eligibility list. Note: the examination process may be changed as deemed necessary. 

Employment Processing: Those selected are subject to a 12-month probation period, and may be subject to pre-employment drug testing and fingerprinting. In accordance with Federal law, an employee must provide proof of identity and legal right to work in the United States.

Knowledge of correct English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation; of filing, indexing and cross referencing methods. Ability to operate a keyboard with sufficient speed and accuracy to meet the needs of the department (minimum speed 45 wpm net); to learn to operate standard office machines and computers; to learn office rules, methods and policies; to perform clerical work according to established procedures; to perform arithmetical calculations with speed and accuracy; to maintain accurate records; to work under pressure of deadlines with frequent interruptions; to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; and to establish and maintain effective work relationships with a variety of people contacted in the course of work.

Any combination equivalent to experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.

Experience: None required.

Other Requirements: Ability to operate a keyboard with sufficient speed and accuracy to meet the needs of the department (minimum speed 45 wpm net). Selected positions require possession of a valid California Driver’s License and a satisfactory driving record as a condition of initial and continued employment.

All knowledge and abilities required for Administrative Clerk I. Knowledge of office practices, procedures, materials and equipment. Ability to operate a keyboard with sufficient speed and accuracy to meet the needs of the department (minimum speed 45 wpm net); to perform more difficult clerical work; to make decisions in procedural matters without immediate supervision.

Education and Experience:

Any combination equivalent to experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.

Experience: One year of general office clerical experience.

Other Requirements: Ability to operate a keyboard with sufficient speed and accuracy to meet the needs of the department (minimum speed 45 wpm net). Selected positions require possession of a valid California Driver’s License and a satisfactory driving record as a condition of initial and continued employment.
