Under the direction of the Community Services Coordinator, the Adult Softball Umpire is responsible for officiating adult softball league games for the City of Davis Parks & Community Services Department. Work hours are week nights between 5:30 pm and 10:30 pm during the months of May through October.
Wages: $18.28-$21.19/per hour, Community Services Specialist VI, Temporary Part-Time, No benefits
Examples of Duties
An Adult Softball Umpire acts as a mediator between players during disagreements, and their knowledge and fair application of the game rules keeps gameplay running smooth. The umpire acts as the unbiased third-party to settle any claims or disagreements about infractions. Umpires also keep and update game records including, but not limited to, incident and accident reports, time cards, and any communications made with the Community Services Coordinator.
Examples of duties (but not limited to):
Officiate and control games, events, and competitions in a confident, appropriate manner.
Ensure all participants understand and comply with game rules and assess penalties when needed.
Make game calls with confidence and knowledge of league rules.
Keep track of event start times, and start or stop play as necessary.
Make sure the teams have the appropriate equipment and inspect both players and equipment for any issues.
Must be at least 18 years old.
Must be comfortable working alone or with other staff.
Must be available week nights and months listed above
Must be able to handle difficult situations involving players and spectators with patience, good judgment and tact.
Must be willing and able to follow both oral and written instructions.
Must possess a complete knowledge of game rules, regulations, strategies, technique and skills.
Must possess strong conflict/resolution and customer service skills
Must possess the ability to cultivate strong communication with co-workers and general public
Previous experience in officiating adult sports is highly desirable.
All umpires must be registered with and certified by USA Softball.
Staff should be prepared to work an outdoor setting. Staff are required to wear a mask/face covering and should be prepared to demonstrate physical social distancing standards in line with current guidelines and requirements to keep all staff and community members safe. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. This is an active position requiring the ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk and occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 50 lbs.; verbal and hearing skills to effectively communicate with children and other staff; visual acuity to oversee projects, and make observations. Work is done outdoors, with exposure to heat, often over 100 degrees, sun, noise, dust, pollens, smoke and slip hazards when near water. Potential risk for exposure to blood borne pathogens when rendering first aid.
