Under supervision, performs unskilled and semi-skilled tasks relating to trees in park strips, City park and recreation facilities, public grounds, and median islands. This is an entry level position with the opportunity to develop tree care skills and become familiar with work methods and standards of employment in a City setting. This position may also work on special projects or help in other sections should the need arise.
Performs a variety of tree maintenance tasks including watering, pruning, trimming, raking up plant material, and planting. Candidate will be trained to operate tree maintenance equipment and motor vehicles such as water trucks and chippers; power tools, hand tools and related equipment; performs routine maintenance work in the care of tools and supplies; operates blowers, rakes leaves, and assists with setting up traffic control; may be required to work weekends, holidays, or in the event of emergencies; and performs other related work as required.
Education and Experience:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade. Tree maintenance experience is desirable, but not required.
Knowledge of: Basic methods, supplies and tools used in the care of trees.
Ability to: Perform all duties as assigned; may perform heavy labor; operate and maintain a variety of equipment; understand and carry out written and oral instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and vendors; and the ability to communicate clearly and concisely with the public, being respectful and empathetic to their situation.
Possession of: Valid California Driver's License.
