THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

The City is seeking an experienced, hands-on parks and recreation professional who enjoys the challenge of working in a lean yet dynamic, fast-paced environment with a focus on delivering results. He/she will have a proven performance record managing significant departmental priorities and recreational activities for a customer base that values, and expects, a high quality of life and variety of activities that appeal to a diverse community. The Director will have a can-do attitude and welcome engaging the public in designing future facilities and programs. This personable and approachable leader will be accessible to staff, colleagues and community stakeholders, effectively fostering strong relationships and mentoring and developing staff.

As a result of the candidate’s professionalism and expertise, this individual will exhibit extraordinary leadership skills that quickly gain him/her credibility with a number of stakeholder groups. Innovative, yet pragmatic, the new Director will have the unique ability to elicit insights and information from residents and external agencies representing different interests and perspectives.

The successful candidate will immerse him/herself in the community to understand the needs of Antioch residents. With a creative and diplomatic approach, the ideal candidate will be able to utilize existing resources and staff to maximize results for the community.

An outstanding communicator, the Director will have the reputation as a person who enjoys interacting with an engaged public and working as a team member with colleagues at the City. Adept at developing relationships, the candidate selected will demonstrate an ability to influence others, be an exceptional presenter, and be comfortable speaking before different groups – from Antioch residents at neighborhood gatherings to City Council meetings. A key responsibility for this Department Head will be to work effectively with a variety of community leaders, program participants and non-profit partners in jointly developing programs that meet the diverse interests of the community. Results-oriented, the next Director will also be keenly aware of emerging trends in the field of leisure services, yet practical in ensuring that innovative concepts are translated into realistic action plans that meet the communities needs and can be accomplished within budgeted resources.

The ideal candidate will be highly proficient in managing departmental responsibilities such as monitoring the budget and oversight of day-to-day operations. This individual will leverage the strengths of the Department and lead it to the next level of excellence. An advocate for staff development and inclusive by nature, this leader will inspire employees to seek greater efficiencies and continuously improve the Department. The new Director will establish a work environment where employees are professionally challenged, take pride in their work and enjoy their role of enhancing and improving programs valued by the community.

A combination of education and experience for this position include a Bachelor’s degree in recreation administration, business or public administration or a related field, plus five years of management and/or administrative experience in parks and recreation supervision or closely related field.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

** Note: Wage Range Depends On Qualifications.

The salary range for the Parks and Recreation Director goes up to $167,144 (effective October 13, 2020); a salary study is underway. Placement within the range will be dependent upon the qualifications of the selected candidate. The City’s benefits package includes:

CalPERS Retirement: 2.7% @ 55 for Classic CalPERS participants (employee cost share is 8%) and 2% @ 62 for new CalPERS participants (employee cost share is 50% of the normal cost as determined by CalPERS which is currently 6.5%). The City does not participate in Social Security.

Deferred Compensation Program: A Deferred Compensation Program is available with a city contribution of 5% of base pay.

Health Insurance: City provides cafeteria-style benefits plan offers options for medical, dental and vision for employees and dependents. The City pays 95% of the Kaiser rate and 100% of the most populated dental plan.

Leave Accrual: Annual vacation leave of 15 days increasing to 20 days starting with the fourth year of service, plus 12 days of administrative leave and 12 days of sick leave.

Holidays: City observes 12 paid legal holidays, plus up to two floating holidays each year.

Automobile Allowance: $350 per month.

Life Insurance: The City maintains a Group Life and Accidental Death and Dismemberment insurance policy. Additional voluntary Supplemental Life Insurance coverage is available for employees and dependents through Standard Life at their own expense.

Long-term Disability Insurance: City provides Long-term disability insurance plan for eligible full-time employees.

Special Additional Benefits Include: Sick leave conversion, vacation buy-back and post-retirement health account.
